Totem of Protection
Cohabitating
Humans + Sea Turtles
Light pollution can change migration habits of wildlife, including sea turtles, birds, and other nocturnal creatures. Human development has previously created light pollution in the night sky, which has confused nesting and hatching turtles. When laying eggs, nesting turtles search for dark beaches and when the baby turtles hatch, they look to the moon as a natural guide back to the sea. But light pollution causes confusion for the sea turtles and can lead to casualties. The Totem of Protection provides muted light to illuminate a path for beach-goers, while protecting sea turtles from harsh fluorescents.
